Abstract: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) was one of infectious disease, its main manifestations were reproductive disorders in sows and respiratory symptoms in piglets. Due to constantly emerging of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) variant, and enable virus to evade immune surveillance, which had brought huge challenges to the swine industry. The inoculation of gastrointestinal way with live or inactivated PRRS vaccine was ineffective in inducing complete protection to the swine herds. In order to reduce the economic losses in the swine industry, new control methods and design of new vaccine approaches should be figured out soon. The research progress on the effective prevention and treatment of PRRSV with mucosal immune method was discussed briefly in this review. The mucosal immunity including mucosal sites, respiratory protective mucosal immune response was introduced, selection of mucosal immune route and adjuvant as well as the immunosuppression were elaborated. This information mightbe a help in understanding the mucosal immunity against PRRSV variants and designing innovative mucosal vaccines.
