Abstract: Okadaic acid is one of potent marine biotoxins that can cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning when consumed. It is produced by marine dinoflagellates and accumulated in digestive glands of shellfish by food chain. The acute food poisoning symptom of eating contaminated seafood is similar to that of the bacterium gastroenteritis. It has a long-term toxicity/carcinogenicity and had been shown to be a potent tumor promoter. Review the constitutive properties, pathogenicity and detecting methods of OA in order to let the public know the significance of detection of OA on the food hygiene and safety.

Key words: okadaic acid(OA); diarrhetic shellfish poisoning(DSP); detection
