Abstract: Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) virus-like particles (VLPs) are particles lack virus-specific genetic materials (RNA), which are self-assembled by four structural proteins and are similar to natural virus particles in morphology. Also, VLPs have better biological activity and immunogenicity. This review focuses on the assembly of FMDV capsid, advances on VLPs, the influencing factors of forming VLPs, and the prospect of the development and application of FMDV VLPs vaccines.

Key words: foot-and-mouth disease virus; virus-like particles (VLPs); assembly; vaccines
