Abstract: Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) (family Paramyxoviridae, genus Morbillivirus) results in a highly contagious viral disease contracted by small ruminants such as goats and sheep. Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) was considered to be an exotic disease until 2007 when an outbreak was observed in Rutog County of Tibet in China. Since the end of 2013,the frequent breakouts of PPR in Xinjiang,Qinghai,Gansu,Ningxia,Mongolia,Hunan and Liaoning province, resulted in tremendous economic loss of animal husbandry, which had become a greatest concern. To understand the characteristic of pathogen better and take the effective measure to prevent and control PPRV,this paper discussed the etiology and advances in PPR vaccine research.
