Abstract

Abstract: Produced and secreted by the adipocyte, tumor necrosis factoralpha (TNF-a) acts as a multifunctional cytokine. In addition to its established role in the immune system, TNF-a also exerted complex regulatory actions on adipose tissue, such as accelerating lipolysis, hindering lipogenesis and adipose cell differentiation and inducing adipose cell apoptosis. Bringing together all of these diverse actions, TNF-α appears to play a general role in reducing adipose tissue mass.
