Abstract: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a group of zoonotic enteric pathogens that can cause a series of human illnesses ranging from watery diarrhea to hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Infections of the pathogen have outbroken in China and worldwide. The article reviewed the distribution and epidemiological trend of STEC O157 and non-O157. Meanwhile, main virulence factors of the disease were reviewed for the purpose to provide a scientific basis for prevention and control of the disease.

Key words: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC); epidemiology; virulence factor
