Abstract: Bone morphogenetic proteins 4(BMP-4) is belonging to the transfer growth factor(TGF-β) superfamily. It involves in the cell of body growth, polarization, apoptosis, migration and the formation of extracellular matrix and many other pathological and physiological activity. Recent studies have shown that BMP-4 gene is closely related to the reproductive performance of mammals. It is a crucial factor in follicular growth and development in the mammalian ovary. In this review, the structure, function and regulation of BMP-4 were introduced. The relationships between BMP-4 gene and follicular development were also discussed in mammals.
