Abstract: NS1 (non-structural 1) protein is the unique non-structural protein found in avian influenza virus. It is a kind of multifunctional regulatory protein which plays a vital role in virus infection, replication and virulence. Its main function is antagonizing the host interferon and tumor necrosis factor, production inhibiting host protein synthesis as well as regulating apoptosis of infected cells. This paper reviews the latest research on the biological characteristics of NS1 protein and its role in infection and immunity which provide a reference for further research on NS1 protein’s characteristics and clinical application.
