Abstract: Current cervical artificial insemination(CAI)procedure involving deposition of excessive sperm numbers is uneconomical for pig industry that is more outstanding in the use of high value-added semen product. In recent years, a deep insemination procedures in combination with fixed-time AI that was greatly developed and applied have shown to be beneficial for reducing the number of sperm required per pregnant sow, thus allowing the best use of valuable boars and, ultimately, the commercial integration of frozen-thawed and sexed sperm. This article provides an overview of the research development and application of the deep insemination procedure for liquid-stored, frozen-thawed and sexed sperm. Variables such as boar fertility, viable sperm rate, sow management, timing of semen delivery and insemination technology should be carefully considered to improving the fertility outcome.
