Abstract: Nonstructural protein NS3 is considered a molecular marker for the cytopathic biotype of bovine viral diarrhea virus and has a variety of biological functions. It has been reported that NS3 played an important role in the processing of other nonstructural proteins, the release of mature particles, viral RNA replication, transcription and the generation of cytopathic effect in the host cell. This paper summarizes the biological properties of NS3 and its related functions, which lays the foundation for further study on the mechanism of NS3-induced cytopathic effect.

Key words: bovine viral diarrhea virus; nonstructural protein NS3; mechanism of biotype alteration; apoptosis
