Research Progress on Mechanism of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Its Application in Improving Coat Hair Health of Dogs and Cats

Abstract: As a basic characteristic of dogs and cats,also being their most apparent features,coat hair serves important functions such as skin protection and ornamental values,and has always been of great concern to pet owners.When the coat hair of dogs and cats are in poor state,it can lead to abnormal conditions such as skin inflammation,pruritus,and even hair loss.The abnormal conditions significantly impacting the overall health of pets.Therefore,investigating how to maintain and improve the healthy state of coat hair in dogs and cats is a worthwhile research question in the field of pet nutrition.Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA),a type of long-chain fatty acids containing two or more double bonds,have been shown to have positive improvement effects on coat hair health,making PUFA promising for the development of products aimed at improving coat hair health in dogs and cats.The authors summarized the mechanism of PUFA in maintaining and improving coat hair health in dogs and cats,and the application of PUFA from animal,plant and microorganisms sources in pet hair health products,with a view to providing a reference for the development and application of PUFA in coat hair health products of dogs and cats in the future.
