Abstract: Aquaporins are integral membrane proteins that selectively transport water. Since aquaporins were discovered in 1988, its gene structure, gene expression regulation, chromosome location, protein structure, tissue distribution, as well as physiological function have been studied deeply. A review on its discovery, molecular structure, categories, distribution and physiological functions, as well as its study perspective was summarized in this article.
