Abstract: Diethylstilbestrol (DES), is a kind of nonsteroid synthesized estrogen. It was widely used in gynecological diseases and in the livestock industry as a growth promoter. Until mid70s, reports about neonatal DES exposed female had an increased risk to developing abnormal reproductive tracts and cancers were widely published. It was certified that DES was harmful to human and environment after over 30 years' study. But it is still controversial about whether DES should have been banned or not. This paper primarily discussed its application, side effects and the different views on DES.
Key words: diethylstilbestrol; carcinogenesis; environmental pollution
