Abstract: As a biological catalyst, enzymes had been widely used in industrial production. But few of nature enzymes could be directly used for industrial production. So, nature enzymes needed be improved. Directed evolution was a molecular biology technique that allowed natural evolutionary processes to be mimicked in the laboratory, it was widely used to improve enzymes and achieved success. This article would be briefly described the methods and applications of directed evolution, meanwhile, the development of directed evolution was also prospected.

Key words: directed evolution; chemical mutagenesis; error-prone PCR; DNA shuffling; random-priming recombination
